HEALTH ADVOCACY

About the Advocate

Kimberly Russell MN, BSN, RN,  Health Advocate

An excellent listener and enjoys helping patients understand medical things and medical language in a clearer way; breaking the information down.  For her, its all about the patient first.  Passionate about providing safe, patient-centered, and compassionate care, Kimberly has worked in the healthcare profession for more than 24 years as a registered nurse and provided care for all age groups (newborns-to-the elderly).

Currently, the focus is on adults age 50 and over with chronic medical conditions.  She worked in hospitals, clinics and in the community in different roles. She believes many people can benefit from having a private healthcare advocate on their side.

Kimberly earned her Master of Nursing (MN) degree (as an Educator) from the University of Washington School of Nursing (of WA State) in 2020 and her Bachelor Degree (Nursing) in 2014. She knows her way around the healthcare system and is effective in being a health team player.  She is experienced in talking and working professionally with multiple doctors and support staff in different medical settings, as well as educating patients and advocating for their healthcare needs.

  • By helping you prepare questions to ask your doctor before your appointments, so you get all the answers you need.

  • By my sitting at your or a loved one's hospital bedside to monitor your safety: physical, medication and environmental safety, while you rest and recover.

  • By filling in a gap in communication on your behalf, to your doctor(s) about your concerns or needs.

  • By making difficult medical information or language easier for you to understand, while you make the best healthcare decisions for yourself.

Some WaysYou Can Benefit

“My mother says she is very pleased with the new medical team and care she is receiving.  Having an experienced Healthcare Advocate is the best decision one can make to ensure that they understand the diagnosis and treatment.”

~ Paula

In Kimberly's Own Words:
The Transition to a Professional Health Advocate

In 2022, my elderly sister almost lost her life in an operating room due to a healthcare communication failure, which led to an emergency event.  Back then I was preparing for a new role as an educator, but my focus immediately shifted to becoming my sister’s patient advocate because no one else in my family worked in healthcare or knew how the medical system operates.

Fortunately, my sister was revived by the medical team, but afterwards she had a very long, six-month recovery/rehabilitation period before getting back her strength. Thankfully, today she has fully recovered and is doing much better.  As a result of that frightening event, I created Simply Explained Health Advocacy as a service.  My purpose is to help other patients, families and providers hopefully avoid or prevent a medical error from happening at all and to bridge gaps in communication.

"During the COVID-19 pandemic, Kim was asked to be a part of the healthcare team to navigate things for us during that difficult time.  We have people with asthma, chronic health conditions and some are elderly.  She researched, compiled, and implemented a safety protocol plan.  As a result, only a few people contracted the virus, but the majority inside the building did not. Recently, our leadership team recognized her dedication to our safety. They insisted her team helped save many lives. We are thankful for them."
